
The Academy Awards short list for Live-Action Short Film has been released and thanks to In Contention, you can even watch trailers and excerpts of most of them to form an opinion about the category that, sadly, is most often referenced by the mainstream as the Oscar pool tie-breaker. Personally, I'm a big fan of the format because it requires a lot of storytelling and filmmaking ingenuity.Before the most recent Oscars, in fact, we interviewed nominee Steph Green after featuring her film in that category, New Boy. I asked her what she felt the biggest misconception about shorts is. "Maybe that they take a short time to make because they're short. People always sound so shocked at how long it actually takes," Green said. "Sometimes that's because there are so few resources, and you're begging and pleading to get things. In fact, you may shoot for a very, very short amount of time, but New Boy took months and months [from beginning to end]."
